Diagnosing GI conditions

- Blood in your stool
- Inconsistencies in your bowel movements
- Narrow stools
- Pelvic pain
- Unexplained weight loss
Early detection and diagnosis are key to managing your healthcare and treatment. Screenings and early detection measures can significantly improve treatment outcomes and survival rates, should any sign of disease be detected.
If your gastroenterologist suspects a GI condition, they may suggest any of the following diagnostic exams:
- Colonoscopy
- Lower GI endoscopy
- Sigmoidoscopy
- Upper GI endoscopy
- Upper GI series
Scheduling a GI diagnostic procedure
All GI diagnostic procedures are performed at the main hospital. Patients can register at the main registration desk (through the main hospital lobby, past the information desk, on the right side).
The registration process usually takes about 10-15 minutes, depending on the volume of patients that day. The procedures themselves usually take 45-60 minutes. To register for a procedure, patients will need an insurance card copy, valid picture ID, physician referral and prior authorization based on insurance.
The registration desk is open from 7:30am to 3:30pm.

Surgery for colorectal conditions
Some common surgeries for colorectal conditions, particular colorectal cancer, are:
- Colectomy—surgery to remove part or all of the colon
- Rectal resection—surgery to remove part or all of the rectum
Robotic colorectal surgery
If you have a colorectal condition that requires surgery, one option that your doctor may recommend is robot-assisted surgery. Our doctors specialize in using robotic technology during surgery that allows the procedure to be performed through several small incisions. During the procedure, your surgeon is on control of robotic arms that provide them with increased precision.
This surgical system also allows for 3D, high-definition imaging that increases your surgeon’s visibility and access to your surgical site. The system, with its attached instruments, offers dexterity and control beyond that of the human hand.
Some of the benefits of robotic colorectal surgery include:
- Faster recovery
- Less pain
- Minimal scarring
- Precise removal of cancerous tissue
- Quicker return of bowel function
- Quicker return of urinary and sexual functions
- Quicker return to normal diet
- Shorter hospital stay
