NICU

The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) provides critical care to newborns who are ill or premature. Many factors may lead to a newborn being admitted to the NICU, including low birth weight or complications during delivery. The NICU staff works closely with parents to develop a treatment plan for their newborn.

Neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) across the Wasatch Front

We understand your child's health is your top priority — and it's ours too. With our highly trained clinical staff who are well-equipped with advanced technology, your newborn will be in skilled hands.

Mountain View Hospital operates a Level II NICU that cares for premature babies born as early as 32 weeks. The NICU, which has been open since early 2021, cares for babies suffering from Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), feeder-growers needing to learn to eat and put on weight, infants on IV Antibiotics, and babies with respiratory issues, such as those needing CPAP. We provide surfactant administration and manage total parenteral nutrition (TPN).

Intensive care for newborns

Our full-time neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) and board-certified pediatrician, working with additional oversight from Timpanogos Regional Hospital neonatologists, care for infants who are born too early or with medical complications. In addition, our respiratory therapists and nurses, who have specialized training, monitor these infants 24/7. Infants who need additional care within 30 days of their birth, regardless of where they were born, are brought to Mountain View Hospital for care.

Advanced NICU technology

The equipment we use in our intensive care unit for newborn babies may seem overwhelming. However, our neonatal staff will be there to answer any questions you may have about the advanced technologies we use, including:

  • Baby movement monitors
  • Comprehensive ventilators
  • Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy ventilators
  • Convertible "giraffe" beds
  • Digital echocardiogram
  • Hearing screeners
  • Oscillating ventilators
  • Physiologic monitors
  • Radiant warmers
  • Syringe infusion pumps

Predictive NICU technology

If your baby needs a higher level of care, our extended team includes our sister facility in Orem, Timpanogos Regional Hospital, which takes babies as early as 24 weeks. Timpanogos Regional is the only NICU in the state with the Joint Commission Prematurity Certification, with a monitoring system that predicts severe conditions before symptoms are visible. This increases positive outcomes for babies in the NICU by 20 percent. This state-of-the-art technology and specialized expertise can help premature babies thrive and grow.

NICU visitation guidelines

Being actively involved in your newborn's care during hospitalization promotes a healthier outcome for your baby. Our nurses will discuss your baby's care plan as it changes with the growth of your baby. As part of this care, and to ensure your baby's safety, our NICUs are "locked units." This means we may need to exercise the right to restrict the number of visitors to protect your little one's health.

Please speak with a nurse for NICU visitation guidelines.
