Cancer treatments options

Timpanogos Regional Hospital, in collaboration with GammaWest Cancer Services, provides some of the most advanced radiation oncology therapies available in Utah County.

Our radiation therapy services include:

Brachytherapy

Brachytherapy, also known as internal radiation, involves the placement of radiation directly at the site of the cancerous tumor. A key feature of brachytherapy is that the radiation only affects a localized area around the radiation source.

The precision of brachytherapy results in patients receiving more efficient treatment. Timpanogos Regional Hospital was the first hospital to bring brachytherapy to Utah County.

Tomotherapy

We also offer image-guided, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IG-IMRT), more commonly referred to as tomotherapy. This system uses images from computed tomography (CT) scans to design external radiation beams that conform to the shape of the tumor. It does this by delivering beams from many directions. During tomotherapy, doctors use the technology to take images of the tumor right before treatment sessions to precisely target the tumor and spare healthy tissue.

What to expect from tomotherapy

During tomotherapy, our radiology team will help you onto the system’s screening bed where you lie on your back. The bed will move you through the CT machine to reveal the location and size of the tumor.

Our oncology team then puts together a plan by using your CT images and special software that determines the size and shape of the tumor and its proximity to sensitive organs and tissues. Our oncology doctor then prescribes how much radiation the tumor should receive and begins treatment.
