Our hospital history

Acting upon a mission statement of "Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life," Ogden Regional Medical Center (ORMC) is a cornerstone of Weber County. ORMC offers invaluable expertise gained from almost 70 years of delivering exceptional patient care. With an outstanding staff of 500 physicians and 1,100 employees and volunteers, ORMC is devoted to providing high-quality healthcare and not only meeting but exceeding expected standards through continuous responsiveness to technology, advanced procedures and individual patient care. For ORMC, the only thing more constant than the need to change and adapt is its unwavering commitment to giving its best every day.

Originally founded on September 18, 1946, under the name of St. Benedict's Hospital, one might say the hospital got its start on "a wing and a prayer" when a few sisters of the Order of St. Benedict journeyed from St. Joseph, Minnesota to the foothills east of Ogden, Utah intent to "caring for the sick as if they were Christ in person."

With a selfless service philosophy, the sisters quietly embraced the community with their gentle care, tender approach and dedication. The sisters' ardent commitment to serving the community's healthcare needs led to the opening of St. Benedict's Hospital on Polk Avenue in Ogden, as well as many significant changes and expanded services through the years, some of which include:

• 1947-1968 - St. Benedict's School of Nursing operated, educating 605 students and producing 357 graduates.
• This program became the basis for Weber State College's Practical Nursing Program.
• 1977 - Success and demand expedited the need for a larger hospital in Washington Terrace, Utah. Relocating proved only to accelerate St. Benedict's healing touch and expansion, which continues today.
• 1977 - Val A. Browning Radiation Therapy opened to treat cancer patients throughout northern Utah and surrounding states. St. Benedict's was a driving force in organizing Hospice of Northern Utah, dedicated to helping terminally ill patients and their families constructively manage illness and dying.
• 1987 - A specialized Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was added in a tradition of advocating for women and children.
• 1992 - Mother's Day heralded the unveiling of a new Women's and Children's Center, including OB/GYN and pediatric physician offices.
• The hospital re-invested millions of dollars in advanced equipment, facilities and new technologies. Strengthening its cardiology program, the cardiac catheterization lab was upgraded, allowing the its open-heart surgery program to be implemented.
• Since 1995 the hospital has been part of what is now (HCA), the nation's largest hospital company with over 180 high-quality hospitals.
• In 2000, ORMC joined with five other Utah HCA-affiliated hospitals to announce a new network and become partners with MountainStar Healthcare.

• 2011 - Spine Institute and Total Joint Center opened to provide evidence-based back and joint pain treatment within a comprehensive support group setting, using leading technology for hip and knee replacements.
• 2013 - Tomotherapy, a revolutionary new radiation therapy, was added to the Cancer Treatment Center; applying innovative, state-of-the-art treatment for cancer patients.
• 2015 - ORMC invested in the extensive renovation, providing a fresh, modern-looking exterior, a more accessible patient-friendly corridor for Outpatient services, and technologically-advanced operating suites.
• 2017 - Opened a new, state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
• 2018 - Significantly expanded our long-standing Alcohol and Chemical Treatment (ACT) services by adding a new Residential Treatment Center. Also began offering Behavioral Health Treatment with a new Behavioral Health Unit (BHU)
• 2019 – Increased community access to emergency services by adding Pleasant View Emergency Center, a free-standing ER located in Pleasant View, Utah, 10 miles north of our hospital.
• 2021 – Opened the Acute Rehabilitation Center, to give the northern Utah community access to physical, mental and speech therapy rehabilitation services.
• 2021 - The official grand opening for a new Medical Office Building located on the north side of the hospital's campus. The building is home to Utah Cancer Specialists; Advanced Allergy & Asthma Clinic; Ogden Regional Medical Center's Outpatient Cardiovascular and Pulmonary & Rehabilitation Center (formerly known as the Heart Center); Acute Rehabilitation Unit; Northern Utah Cardiovascular Associates; Northern Utah Vascular and Mountainstar Cardiovascular Services
