Okay, if you are anything like me, boredom and a break in my routine means mindless snacking and not meeting my daily step goal. So all this COVID house arrest is a sure fire way to ruin any progress you might have made on your weight loss journey. Fear not! If you are feeling trapped at home, let’s find some ways to keep your healthy lifestyle on track.

Are you sick? If not, you can still go out for a walk, just don’t go to the mall to do it! Thankfully, the weather is fantastic right now, so put on your sneakers and take your dog for a walk. We are supposed to be avoiding gatherings of more than 10 – so maybe not the dog park either, but you can definitely go for a stroll around the block or take a little hike! Break your walks up into mini-walks. There has been some compelling research showing that shorter workouts will have longer lasting impact on our vascular health and also help to improve insulin sensitivity vs doing all of our exercising at once. Even better – exercise after you eat! Don’t let yourself get the post meal slumpies, I promise you will feel energized, studies have shown – it is more effective than a cup of coffee (and I love coffee, so I promise, I am not in the anti-coffee lobby).

Do you have a Nintendo switch? I am obsessed with Just Dance! There is even an online World Competition, and I am on there almost every evening, usually in the top 50… not to brag. Come join me, it is really silly, it is fun, you don’t have to have any talent, I promise. If you have kids, they will love it, and you can buy it online if you don’t have that game.

Free online classes are available right now. I don’t think this will last but right now a lot of companies are streaming online (for free, because they want you to get hooked and then join!) Core Power Yoga is one of them. Very high quality yoga classes and I am going to give you a tip, if you don’t have a yoga mat, that is ok, just get a towel and fold it to protect your knees. Make sure you take off your socks and are on a non-slippy floor.

Do you want to horrify your children – check out 305 workouts! New York Hip Hop Dance classes in your living room, you will be popping and twerking like the best of them. It really is fun, and come on – that is what it is all about.

If you want a more traditional and less silly work out – Cut 7 has a google drive filled with workouts so check them out.

If you are sick – don’t sweat it, take it easy, fluids, rest, and if you have shortness of breath or difficulty breathing – get thee to the emergency room! That is not the time to be worrying about your workout routine. If you aren’t sick though, maybe this social isolation will be just the thing you needed to motivate you to jump start your workout routine!

The Weight Treatment Center at St Marks wants you to stay healthy, we are offering tele-health visits right now, so if you want to reach out and seek professional advice about how to lose weight, please give us a call and we can still see you, in the comfort of your own home!
