Millcreek, UT — According to a new study focused on patient safety and quality of care metrics, Utah’s first hospital is also a “Best Hospital.”
St. Mark’s Hospital, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, was the only Utah hospital to make a prestigious list of top hospitals released by Money (formerly Money Magazine) and the nonprofit Leapfrog Group. The 2022 Best Hospitals list was created to help consumers make educated decisions about which institutions are best for their money.
St. Mark’s was one of 148 U.S. hospitals to earn the recognition, which was based on 39 performance measures in seven different categories: inpatient care management, adult and pediatric complex surgeries, pediatric care, medication safety, maternity care, outpatient procedures and infections.
“It’s so fitting to receive this recognition of our commitment to quality care right as we’re celebrating a century and a half of serving the people of Utah,” said Jeremy Bradshaw, chief operating officer of St. Mark’s Hospital. “We’ve been a leader in quality healthcare in this state since we opened our doors to care for miners and rail workers in 1872. Today, the needs of our community look different, but what hasn’t changed in the passion to serve shared by each of our colleagues, physicians, leaders, volunteers and partners.”
With more than 300 licensed beds, St. Mark’s Hospital is the largest facility in the MountainStar Healthcare network, which operates eight Utah hospitals from Logan to Payson.
“St. Mark’s is such an integral part of the care network we’ve built to serve Utahns,” said Greg Angle, president of MountainStar Healthcare. “The hospital’s size, capabilities and consistent quality have made it an institution that the community trusts. For the Leapfrog Group, known for its expertise in measuring quality, to recognize the consistently excellent care delivered at St. Mark’s is really meaningful, and I’m proud of our team.”
As part of HCA Healthcare, a leading national health services provider with 182 hospitals and more than 2,300 sites of care in the U.S. and U.K., St. Mark’s and its sister hospitals in Utah have access to insights, data and best practices from over 35 million annual patient interactions.
“We truly are a local hospital with a deep understanding of our community, but also with the backing of a strong national healthcare system,” Bradshaw added. “That combination is really unique, and brings value to families in Utah every single day.”
St. Mark’s also continues to evolve to meet the healthcare needs in one of the fastest growing states in the nation. A new patient tower is scheduled for completion in 2023. The project will add 125,000 square feet of space to the hospital and also renovate 40,000 square feet, resulting in larger patient rooms, more comfortable common spaces for families and visitors, and increased space to support service line growth.
Only hospitals with an A letter grade on the fall 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assessment were eligible for the Best Hospitals designation. From there, hospitals were required to pass a qualitative assessment of excellence and meet other criteria around patient safety, staffing and standards of excellence.
