Hand and upper extremity treatments
Your treatment plan will depend on your diagnosis and unique needs. Sometimes, our orthopedic specialists can treat hand and upper extremity conditions with noninvasive methods, such as medication or physical therapy. We always strive to alleviate your pain and symptoms with these and other noninvasive techniques before suggesting surgery.
Hand and upper extremity surgery
When noninvasive treatments do not relieve your symptoms, surgery may be an effective option. Our hand and upper extremity surgeons are highly experienced in performing hand and arm procedures, including:
- Elbow replacement surgery
- Hand surgery
- Impingement syndrome treatment
- Minimally invasive carpal tunnel surgery
- Non-fusion hand treatment
- Rotator cuff repair
- Shoulder replacement surgery
Elbow replacement surgery
Elbow replacement surgery may be an effective treatment for joint pain when noninvasive methods of care do not relieve your pain. During this procedure, your surgeon replaces the damaged joint with an artificial joint, called a prosthesis. The result is a healthy elbow joint that allows you to bend and use your arm without pain.
Rotator cuff repairs
The rotator cuff is a collection of muscles and tendons in the shoulder that attaches your upper arm to your shoulder blade. The rotator cuff is responsible for helping you reach, push, pull, lift and throw objects.
In some cases, shoulder pain is the result of a damaged rotator cuff. Your rotator cuff can become inflamed or damaged due to:
- Bursal inflammation (bursitis)
- Calcium deposits (calcification)
- Tears in the tendon
If your rotator cuff is damaged and inflamed, your doctor may prescribe rest or injections to allow the tendons to repair themselves. However, if nonsurgical treatments do not alleviate your pain, surgically repairing the rotator cuff may be suggested.
Shoulder replacement surgery
In some cases, shoulder pain may be caused by severe damage to the shoulder joint. This damage could be caused by injury, disease or "wear and tear" over the years. If there is significant damage to your shoulder joint, your surgeon may suggest a shoulder replacement surgery.
In a shoulder replacement surgery, the surgeon replaces all or part of the shoulder joint with artificial components (prostheses). The result is a like-new shoulder joint, which restores your range of motion and allows you to move your arm easily and freely.
Our surgeons offer:
- Partial shoulder replacement surgery
- Total shoulder replacement surgery
- Reverse shoulder replacement surgery
