This diet may be prescribed for patients with heart disease or other medical conditions. It is low in total fat, saturated fat, sodium and caffeine. In some cases, fluids may also be restricted.
This diet restricts the amount of sodium (salt) consumed to about 2000mg (2 grams) per day. This diet is intended to help prevent fluid retention and may help to control high blood pressure.
This diet is designed for patients with elevated blood sugar levels. One carb choice/serving contains approximately 15 grams of carbohydrates. The number of carb choices in a food is indicated following the menu Item. For example: bread (1) indicates that 1 slice of bread equals 1 carb choice/serving or approximately 15 grams total carbohydrates.
Patients with kidney failure may be prescribed a renal diet. A renal diet is low in sodium, potassium and phosphorous. Fluids m y also be limited. Depending on treatment plan; protein may be encouraged or restricted.
Speech Therapy may order a texture modified diet for patient safety. These dysphagia diets include:
Dysphagia 1 — Pureed
Dysphagia 2 — Minced
Dysphagia 3 — Chopped
This diet means "Nothing By Mouth". It is designed to rest your digestive tract. You may be NPO if you are having certain tests or surgery.
Prescribed after surgery to rest the gastrointestinal tract, or before certain tests. Liquid diets are generally used short term or as a transition to solid food.
Clear Liquids — pulp free liquids you can see through such as broth, gelatin, popsicles, juice, tea or coffee.
Full Liquids — smooth consistency foods without lumps or pieces, such as thinned hot cereals, strained cream soups, pudding, milk, milkshakes, and juices with or without pulp, yogurt without fruit chunks, ice cream plus all of the foods allowed on a clear liquid.
This diet provides a healthy diet without restricting any foods. A balanced diet comes from choosing a variety of foods in moderate amounts.
This diet may be provided when transitioning from a liquid to a solid diet. This diet restricts most common digestive irritants including high fiber foods, fatty/greasy foods,past gas forming foods and excess spices.
