Powered by MDLIVE, MountainStar Virtual Care is now available to patients 24/7

  • Patients can conveniently and affordably consult with a doctor about an urgent, non-emergency medical issue anytime and anywhere including after hours, weekends and holidays
  • Anytime, anywhere virtual access is provided by mobile devices with a secure Internet connection including smart phones, tablets or computers with video capabilities

MountainStar Healthcare and MDLIVE, a leading telehealth provider, have teamed up to bring virtual patient care to northern Utah. MountainStar Virtual Care is an on-demand service that connects people with an experienced physician in real-time via a smart phone, tablet or personal computer. Patients can conveniently and affordably consult with a doctor of their choice about a concerning, urgent medical issue – anytime and anywhere and for only $49 per visit.

“In today’s busy, highly-connected world, we believe our patients will value the ability to consult with a doctor at a time and place that’s convenient for them,” says Troy Wood, vice president of business development, MountainStar Healthcare. “Whether paying bills, checking bank balances or buying merchandise, an increasing number of people obtain what they need online. Now Utahns have an online choice for health care; they can use MountainStar Virtual Care to access timely, confidential and interactive doctor visits for urgent medical conditions.”

Virtual Care is designed to help people who do not need care in an emergency department and prefer not to wait for an appointment in a doctor’s office. Local MountainStar physicians specializing in family medicine or primary care are teamed up with MDLIVE physicians nationwide to take care of patients 24/7. They evaluate patients in real-time over a secure Internet connection or during a phone consultation as well as provide treatment and follow-up via interactive video, email, text and phone calls.

During an affordable virtual doctor visit, Virtual Care physicians will diagnose and treat urgent medical conditions like allergies and asthma, cold and flu symptoms, stomach aches and nausea as well as headaches, backaches and joint pain. After a thorough evaluation, some patients may be advised to schedule an appointment with their primary care physicians, seek care in an urgent care clinic, or go to the closest emergency department.

While providing care, participating physicians will utilize a secure system to access available online medical records and lab results, given the patient’s consent. When necessary, the physician will order prescriptions from the patient’s pharmacy of choice, and refer patients to a primary care physician or specialist when additional or follow-up care is recommended.

This year, an estimated 450,000 patients will see a doctor over the Internet for basic ailments like colds, infections or aches and pains, per the American Telemedicine Association. Utilization of telehealth services will increase from an estimated 250,000 patients in 2013 to an estimated 3.2 million patients in 2018 as patients become more proactive in their health care delivery choices, according to the American Hospital Association.

MountainStar Healthcare is committed to delivering the right level of patient care at the right time. As a telehealth service, VirtualCare joins similar and already successful programs including tele stroke, tele-neurology, and tele-mental health. Each program provides more timely assessment and accurate care for patients at MountainStar hospitals throughout Utah.
